IDEA
User Experience Project for Scout Studio, Spring 2019
Project Lead
IDEA has partnered with Scout for the past 10 years as a student venture accelerator program, connecting ventures with design and development teams to take their products to the next level. Scout has also offered their services to IDEA in terms of branding & identity, website design, and conference design. This year featured the first real break with that trend–my team instead embarked on a massive UX project to evaluate and reimagine IDEA's ten-year-old venture pipeline in the course of one semester. Through interviews, events, and discussion, we created deliverables designed to make the IDEA journey from Ready to Launch as easily understandable as possible.

The course of this project was far from easily understandable to us, though. As project lead, I had to determine the project's scope and timeline for this incredible request to even approach something feasible. We first entered the process chronologically, interacting with IDEA as a new venture would, and learning about IDEA from the ground up. Each week, my two collaborators and I would reassess our findings, our projected deliverables, and come up with new frameworks for each stage based on our interviews and experiences. Our expectations for this project dramatically shifted over four months.

Throughout the course of this project, we designed:
-a user persona & journey map template for future use
-experience maps for every stage
-new terminology & protocol, as well as other instances of solution design, for each stage
-a comprehensive system of booklets
       -a handbook for each stage
-a set of how-to guides for the specific pillars of each stage
-a rigorous Research Report summarizing our findings, our solution design, and our final deliverables

In our research, we came to realize a large portion of confusion stemmed from misunderstandings about the specific purposes of each stage in IDEA's process. Many ventures were also hindered by a communications block about stage-specific resources, often disconnected from the IDEA support system.

Firstly, we devised a new colour-coding system for each stage (Ready, Set, Go, & Launched) to help clarity. Secondly, we set to creating new stage infographics as a weekly exercise and testing them out to see which worked most effectively. Thirdly, we committed to researching and mapping the specific moments where IDEA's communication system fell through.

Our guiding objective for this project, even when scope was still an imaginary thing, was to locate and alleviate the pain points in this outdated system. Mapping out the emotional & logistical journey of the ventures we spoke to was an incredibly important part of this project.
